Prayer About Godly Encouragement vs. Discouragement (Based on 2 Chronicles 32:7-8)

Encouraging Heavenly Father, I come in Jesus’ Name to thank You for being the great encourager for born-again believers in the Lord Jesus Christ. This is a blessing You give through Your Word, the Bible. Isaiah 41:10 “‘Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous righthand.”

Thank you for the encouragement I can receive from meditating on Your attributes. For example, it is a great blessing to know from Your Word, the Bible, that You are all-knowing. Nothing about me is a surprise to You. Psalm 139:1-4 “O LORD, You have searched me and known me. You know my sitting down and my rising up; You understand my thought afar off. You comprehend my path and my lying down, and are acquainted with all my ways. For there is not a word on my tongue, but behold, O LORD, You know it altogether.“

You are there when situations in my life seem large and looming. It does not matter what comes against me, You are far greater and more powerful. Like in King Hezekiah’s situation in 2 Chronicles 32:7, remind me often of what he told his people to encourage them that no matter the size of the army of their enemy against them, God was bigger and stronger. By remembering who God was, they were encouraged and found strength. Hezekiah said in 2 Chronicles 32:7-8a “‘Be strong and courageous; do not be afraid nor dismayed before the king of Assyria, nor before all the multitude that is with him; for there are more with us than with him. With him is an arm of flesh; but with us is the LORD our God, to help us and to fight our battles.’“

I ask You to show me daily how to gain encouragement from Your powerful words in the Bible, including Bible stories and events. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

God’s Guidelines for Living a Godly Life (Based on Psalm 15)

Heavenly Father, I come in Jesus’ Name to give You thanks and praise for the guidance that Psalm 15 gives me on how to live a life that honors You.  David, right at the beginning of this Psalm, makes it clear that You want to teach me how to live a holy life.  You want my standards to come from You and not the evils of the society that I live in. In order for me to have fellowship with You and be able to dwell with You, David says that I must do what is expressed in verse 2. “He who walks uprightly, and works righteousness, and speaks the truth in his heart.” 

Since words can be powerful and a reflection of what kind of relationship I have with You, direct me not to do any of the things David expressed were wrong in verse 3. “He who does not backbite with his tongue, nor does evil to his neighbor, nor does he take up a reproach against his friend.” Thank you for giving me specific things that I can identify in my life that I can work on to become more upright and righteous. 

I ask that You be a constant source of strength from which I can draw the energy needed to make any changes to be obedient to the guidelines in this psalm. Convict me if I stray from any of Your commandments and direct me to confession and repentance if needed. It is my heart’s desire to constantly know and love You more, and I ask that You do whatever is necessary to align my heart with Your perfect will and plan.

In the Name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.

Jesus as the Good Shepherd (Based on John 10:1-29)

Caring Heavenly Father, I come to You in the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ, similar to how a sheep comes to its shepherd. Just as a sheep is very dependent on its shepherd for survival, I acknowledge that I have many insufficiencies and am unable to guide myself through all of life’s twist and turns. It is evident that I need You as the Good Shepherd to protect and guide me, just as the shepherd guides his sheep. Verse 10-11: “‘The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly. I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep.’“

Teach me to listen and respond only to Your voice, just as sheep know the voice and respond only to their shepherd. Give me wise discernment to realize when the voice of a stranger, the evil one, is calling and trying to lead me astray.  Thank you that every Christian believer is infinitely valuable in Your eyes. Just like a shepherd helps when one of his sheep is in trouble, You will always seek out any of Your children who are in difficulty to protect them from eternal harm. Direct me to stay close to Your voice and listen and obey when You call. Verse 27: “‘My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand.’“

It is a great blessing and reassuring message that when I accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as my personal Savior and became a born-again child of Yours, there is nothing the evil one can do to snatch me away from You and Your love. Jesus said in John 10:28, “And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand.” 

In Jesus’ Name, thank you for being my Savior and Shepherd.

Heavenly Father, I come in Jesus’ wonderful Name to thank You for this time of Easter to celebrate the completed cycle of events for my salvation, which is ultimately a home in Heaven with You. It was only a few months ago that I celebrated Christmas, the miraculous birth of Your Son coming to Earth to save mankind from a place of terrific sufferings called Hell. It is Jesus’ horrific death on the cross for my past, present, and future sins and His resurrection that has made it possible for me to live in Heaven with You forever after my life on earth. 

Thank you that what Jesus told Martha in John 11:25-26 applies to me as well. “‘I am the resurrection and the life, He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?’” Thank you that Easter does not only pertain to the past or a future time. Because of everything surrounding Easter, my life as a Christian has been fully impacted and affected in the present. One of the greatest gifts You have given me is the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.

Through Your Word, You correct and direct me on how to experience and enjoy many of your blessings. An example is Philippians 4:6-7. “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” Jesus, thank you for all You did for me on the cross. Because of all that You have done, are doing, and will do in the future, I say to You Revelation 5:12b. “‘Worthy is the Lamb who was slain to receive power and wisdom, and strength and honor and glory and blessing!’“

2023 Good Friday Prayer About the Cross (Based on John 19:17-18)

Heavenly Father, in Jesus’ Name, thank you for what Good Friday stands for: Jesus’ horrific death on the cross for my sins, and all the sins of the world. John 19:17-18 “And He, bearing His cross, went out to a place called the Place of a Skull, which is called in Hebrew, Golgotha, where they crucified Him, and two others with Him, one on either side, and Jesus in the center.” Forgive me for the times I would rather skip reading and meditating on that horrible day of suffering in Jesus’ life and read about the glorious day of Easter instead.

Good Friday is very critical in the whole Easter story. Without it, there would be no Easter. Direct me to understand the full meaning of what happened on both those days. 1 Corinthians 15:4 “And that He was buried, and He rose again on the third day according to the Scriptures.” It is a blessing that as much as our culture hates to hear about the cross and Jesus’ blood and what it stands for, it is still the only way of cleansing all the sin in this decadent world. Your Word (the Bible) makes it clear that it is the blood of the lamb (Jesus) that cleanses me from all sin. Thank you for the beautiful song, The Old Rugged Cross, that summarizes all that happened on Good Friday.

“On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross, the emblem of suffering and shame; and I love that old cross where the dearest and best, for a world of lost sinners was slain. In the old rugged cross, stained with blood so divine, a wonderous beauty I see; for it ’twas on that old cross Jesus suffered and died, to pardon and sanctify me.”       

Thank you for the glory of next week, Easter and the Resurrection. Amen.

Prayer About Godly Life Lessons to Follow from Noah Building the Ark (Based on Genessis 6-8)

Heavenly Father, in Jesus’ Name, thank you for recording in the Bible Noah’s example of living a godly, obedient life. His story illustrates that when evil is all around me, I can still have a good relationship with You. Although I am far from perfect, by following Noah’s example I can find what he did in Genessis 6:8. “But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord.” I ask that You teach me how to listen to You like Noah did. You gave him detailed instructions on how to build the ark and showed him what was needed to care for his family and the many animals during their time on the ark. Genesis 6:21 “And you shall take for yourself of all the food that is eaten, and you shall gather it to yourself; and it shall be food for you and for them.”

Develop in me a trust in You and Your Word like Noah had. It must have been difficult for him to trust for so many years that he was hearing correctly and following Your exact instructions. But he did, and I should also. Genesis 6:22 “Thus Noah did; according to all that God commanded him, so he did.” Direct me to have the unwavering faith of Noah when I follow Your commands to me. 

Thank you for the great lesson I can learn from this story that when You speak through Your Word and Spirit, I should listen, follow, trust, and obey. Thank you for the physical reminder of this story that comes when You show a beautiful rainbow in the sky, signifying that You made a covenant that there will never be a worldwide flood again. Genessis 9:13 “I set my rainbow in the cloud, and it shall be for the sign of the covenant between Me and the earth.“

Trustworthy Heavenly Father, I come to You in the Name of Your perfect Son, Jesus Christ, to give You thanks and praise for the trustworthiness of Your Word, the Bible. There is no other book or writing in the world that has the accuracy, validity, and breath of life that the Bible has. David reflects on Your words as pure and dependable. Psalm 12:6 “The words of the LORD are pure words, like silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times.”

It is a blessing that You have given concrete evidence that allows me to fully trust in Your Word. You have shown time and again that Your Scriptures have been, and continue to be, faithful in the promises You have made. Looking at the many prophecies in Your Word that have been fulfilled in the past, I can rest assured that all future ones will come to pass as well. One of the best examples of this is all that was predicted in the Bible to happen, and has happened, surrounding Jesus’ birth, life, death, and resurrection.

I ask for forgiveness for the times when I fail to read, trust, and use this powerful gift (Your Word) that You have given to me. Thank you for the strong Christian foundation I can build from Your Word and that I can cling to every promise You have made to me. Direct me into an even deeper, more trusting relationship with You as I continue to read and explore Your written Word and meditate on it. Psalm 33:4 “For the word of the LORD is right, and all His work is done in truth.” It is a blessing that You are perfectly holy and that Your Word can be completely trusted. Your character of faithfulness is proven, and You magnify Your Word above everything, including Jesus’ Name. Psalm 138:2b “For You have magnified Your word above all Your name.“

I put my trust in You, and You alone. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Heavenly Father, I come to You in Jesus’ Name to thank You for calling me to live a set apart life unto You. It is a blessing to see You continually develop in my life the command in 1 Peter 1:15-16. “But as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, because it is written, “Be holy, for I am holy.’”

Thank you that You not only give the command for me to live a separated life from the ungodly culture and its ways, but also give me a way to accomplish this. It is because of my personal relationship with Jesus Christ that I can give myself to You and have You direct me to follow the guidelines You have laid out for living in a fallen world. Romans 12:1 “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.”

Direct me to be constantly aware that being set apart for You involves more than just avoiding certain behaviors and customs, but begins and is firmly founded in my mind. It is only the Holy Spirit dwelling within me that can truly transform by renewing, reeducating, and redirecting the mind to having true value in God’s eyes. Romans 12:2a “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” Give me the desire and courage to be different from the world and to honor You instead. May my life in private and in public have a positive influence on what people think of the God I love and serve.

All wise Heavenly Father, I come in Jesus’ Name to thank You for putting all the knowledge that I need for living the Christian life into Your Word (the Bible). It is a great gift that You give to me and all believers in the Lord Jesus Christ. It is wisdom that I cannot create with my own initiative, but takes study of Your Word to develop and use. Verse 6-7: “For the LORD gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding; He stores up sound wisdom for the upright; He is a shield to those who walk uprightly.”

Thank you for how Your knowledge and wisdom direct me to avoid foolishness and ruin. I confess to You and ask forgiveness for the times when I act before asking for Your knowledge from Your Word so that I may have godly discretion about all situations. Verse 10-11: “When wisdom enters your heart, and knowledge is pleasant to your soul, discretion will preserve you; understanding will keep you.” I thank You for what is expressed by Paul in 1 Corinthians 2:12. The Holy Spirt gives me the ability to understand and believe what can only be understood spiritually. “Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God.”

Thank you for sending Your Son Jesus to represent Your power and wisdom. I can never be in a place where You are not available to help. Direct me to experience all that You say about wisdom so that Proverbs 3:13 is a reality in my life. “Happy is the man who finds wisdom, and the man who gains understanding.”

Salvation by God Alone

Saving Heavenly Father, in Jesus’ Name, thank you that salvation is fully completed by You. Titus 3:5 “Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit.“

Understanding God’s Word

Heavenly Father, in Jesus’ Name, direct me to comprehend and practice Psalm 119:17-18. “Deal bountifully with Your servant, that I may live and keep Your word. Open my eyes, that I may see wondrous things from Your law.” 

God is Truth

Truthful Heavenly Father, in Jesus’ wonderful Name, thank you that I can trust in all of Your truthful character. Titus 1:2 “In hope of eternal life which God, who cannot lie, promised before time began.“

Indwelling Holy Spirit

Heavenly Father, in Jesus’ Name, thank you that as a believer in Jesus Christ I have You, through the Holy Spirit, dwelling within me even with an imperfect nature. Ezekiel 36:27a “I will put My Spirit within you.”

Practicing Humility

Loving Heavenly Father, in Jesus’ Name, direct me to practice James 4:10. “Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.“

Renewing the Mind

All wise Heavenly Father, I ask in Jesus’ Name that You daily make Romans 12:2 new to me. “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.”
