Heavenly Father, I come to You in Jesus’ Name to praise You for being all-powerful, all-knowing, ever-present, and unchanging. Jeremiah 32:17 “‘Ah, Lord GOD! Behold, You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and outstretched arm. There is nothing too hard for You.’”

I thank You for loving me and wanting a close personal relationship with me, even though Your power far surpasses my own. Mark 10:27 “…Jesus… looked at them and said, “With men it is impossible, but not with God; for with God all things are possible.”‘ I praise You for the way exercise Your power, not as an evil dictator, but as a loving Father who desires good for His children. Matthew 7:11 “If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!”

Help me to be steadfast in faith and on high alert to resist the work of Satan as he tries everything possible to hinder and destroy me as Your child. 1 Peter 5:7-8 “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.” Direct me to rely on Your power, not my own, to resist the attacks of the devil and live a life that honors You.

I cast all of my burdens and cares upon You. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Lord, I come in Jesus’ Name to thank You for the peace and comfort it gives me to know that You are everywhere present and that You see every situation in my life. Even the events in my life that I do not understand are not a surprise to You. Proverbs 15:3 “The eyes of the LORD are in every place, keeping watch on the evil and the good.”

May I be conscious at all times of the fact that I am living in Your presence. Encourage me to have a growing desire to live in a way that is pleasing to You. When the challenges of life come, direct me to get my focus off of my problems and onto Jesus. Colossians 3:2 “Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.”

As I invite You, Jesus, to be my defender and counselor, show me how, though You may not immediately calm the storms in my life, You are always willing to calm me as Your child in the midst of the storm. Isaiah 43:2-3a tells me, “when you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned, nor shall the flame scorch you. For I am the LORD your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior…”

I bring these praises and requests to You in Jesus’ precious Name, Amen.

God’s Purpose in Our Trials and Suffering

Heavenly Father, I come to You in Jesus’ Name to thank You for Your promise that You will ultimately restore, strengthen, and establish me despite any suffering I experience here on earth. 1 Peter 5:10 “But may the God of all grace, who called us to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a while, perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you.“

Thank you that through the difficulties in my life, I can come to a better understanding of the ultimate suffering that Jesus went through on the cross when He died for me. Philippians 1:29 “For to you it has been granted on behalf of Christ, not only to believe in Him, but also to suffer for His sake.”

I live in a fallen world, and therefore some stress and suffering is to be expected. Direct me to discern the difference between suffering for Christ and suffering because of bad choices that I make. In either kind of suffering, show me how to experience the answer found in 2 Corinthians 12:9. “And He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore most gladly will I rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.”

I ask that You encourage and bless the many Christians throughout the world who are living with the daily threat of martyrdom for their faith in You.

Thank you that as I go through this life as a believer, I can look forward to having the reality found in Revelation 21:4 at the end of my life. “And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.“

In Jesus’ Name I come, Amen.

God as My Fortress and Refuge

Lord, I come to You in Jesus’ Name to thank You for the image Psalm 59:16 portrays of You being all around me: “But I will sing of Your power; yes, I will sing aloud of Your mercy in the morning; for You have been my defense and refuge in the day of my trouble.“ I praise You for being my strong anchor against all foes.

Thank you for the promise in 1 John 4:4. “You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.” What a wonderful comfort it is to know that as Your child, I can always find refuge in You, my fortress. Teach me how to better grasp the concept of Your faithfulness and experience it through Your Word.

You have told me many times in Scripture that You want to be my first line of defense. Therefore, I bring to You the following concerns: [insert your own concerns here, such as rejection, illness, children, marriage, friends, travel, etc.].

I release these concerns to You so that I, by faith, may receive Your mercy, grace, and help in my times of need. Hebrews 4:16 “Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”  I ask that believers in many parts of the world who are suffering from poverty, war, persecution, and natural disasters would turn to You as their shelter and refuge as well.

Thank you that I can rest in Your powerful might, which is stronger than any method of self-defense I could ever devise. I ask and pray these things to You in Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Living With the Joy of the Lord

Heavenly Father, I come to You in Jesus’ Name to thank you that the Word of God has within it the power to produce joy. When my life is closely in touch with You, You walk with me through difficult times so that I do not have to endure them alone. And in times of great prosperity, I thank You for keeping me from becoming prideful or complacent.

I praise You that when I walk with Jesus daily, You give me the joy of being level-headed no matter what the circumstances are. Nehemiah 8:10b “…the joy of the Lord is your strength.”

Father, since the joy You give far exceeds any human joy, I ask for an abundance of it. Please guide me in the choices I make and the actions I take so that I can experience all the joy You desire for me. John 15:11 “‘These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be full.‘”

Direct me to understand that Your deep joy comes only to those who value You more than anything else.  I ask for the blessing Paul expressed in Romans 15:13. “Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”

Heavenly Father, I want to come to You in Jesus’ Name and thank You for being the God of all comfort, who gives me reassurance in difficult situations. I am thankful for the privilege of being able to come to You to receive mercy, grace, and help in my times of need. Hebrews 4:16 “Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”

Direct me to experience what You have told me in Matthew 11:28-30. “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”

I ask that You lead me to:

  • Scriptures in Your Word that speak of Your comfort in times of trouble
  • Christian music that exalts Your Name
  • Fellowship with other believers that will encourage me to live for You

Enable me to share the same comfort You have given to me with my children, grandchildren, and others in my realm of influence. 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.”

I praise You, my God from whom all blessings flow. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Heavenly Father, I come to You in Jesus’ Name to praise You for Your wonderful attributes such as being the Creator, all-powerful, all-knowing, everywhere present, unchanging, loving, and merciful; for giving me the ability to recognize the good things that come from You, such as beauty, mercy, kindness, grace, and love. James 1:17 “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.”

Thank you that You always plan whatever happens in my life for my good, even when I can’t begin to comprehend the situation. Romans 8:28 “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.”

Give me an understanding and appreciation for Your creation. You demonstrate Your goodness in how You have designed everything to work together to provide not only for human beings, but for all the animals and plants of the earth.

I ask you to raise up powerful voices in our culture to speak about Your goodness and share the truth of Your Word. Direct me to live out Your goodness as an example to others on a daily basis. Thank you for the wonderful promise in Psalm 31:19. “How great is the goodness you have stored up for those who fear you. You lavish it on those who come to you for protection, blessing them before the watching world.” (NLT)

Thank you, Lord, for your goodness. In Jesus’ wonderful Name, Amen.

Prayer About the Power and Danger of Enticement

All wise and powerful Heavenly Father, I come in the name of my Savior Jesus Christ to admit to You that in my own strength, I am weak and frail. Thank you that in my desperate times of need, I can come to You who has open arms waiting for me at all times. There are times I am enticed by the evils of this world to drift away from Your good and perfect plan for me. Sometimes I find myself straying from Your light, thinking about momentary pleasure and worldly gain. Hebrews 2:1 “Therefore we must give the more earnest heed to the things we have heard, lest we drift away.“

However, my desire is to be in perfect communion with You, developing Matthew 26:41. “Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” It is a blessing that in my weaknesses and shortcomings, Your glorious perfection and grace shine through all the brighter.

How wonderful it is to know that even in my weakness, You will never forsake me. With each enticement, You provide a way of escape if I am willing to follow Your Word, the Bible. 1 Corinthians 10:13 “No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.“

Thank you for sending Your Son, Jesus, to die on the cross for a world filled with brokenness and enticement. He knows what I go through each day and has felt the same things I do. I ask that whenever I am having to wrestle with worldly enticements, You will direct me to come to You to overcome them. It is only through You that even what seems impossible is possible to accomplish. Matthew 19:26b “‘With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.’“

To God be the glory. Amen.

Gaining Courage by Looking Back at God’s Past Actions (Based on Psalm 77)

All Wise and Powerful Heavenly Father, I come in Jesus’ Name to thank You for the example for developing courage found Psalm 77. In the first 12 verses, the author shares about how sometimes, like I am, he was overwhelmed by the evil and despair in this fallen world. How quickly I can get my focus of off Your light and get lost in the consuming darkness of sin and suffering.

However, thank you that just like the author in verses 13-20 of this Psalm, if I change my thinking to focus on all of the positive things You have done for me in the past, it will encourage me to trust in Your promises for the future.

Verses 10-14 “And I said, “This is my anguish; but I will remember the years of the right hand of the Most High.” I will remember the works of the LORD; surely I will remember Your wonders of old. I will also meditate on all Your work, and talk of Your deeds. Your way, O God, is in the sanctuary; who is so great a God as our God? You are the God who does wonders; You have declared Your strength among the peoples.”

Lord, I ask that You will direct me to turn my mind and my heart toward You who gives comfort and protection, not only in difficult times, but always. Remind me frequently that it is the reading of Your Word, prayer with You, filling my mind with Christian music, and fellowshipping with strong believers that will allow me the positive experience of Deuteronomy 31:6. “Be strong and of good courage, do not fear nor be afraid of them; for the LORD your God, He is the One who goes with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you.“

Thank you for the encouragement and teaching from these verses. In Jesus’ Name, amen.

Prayer About the Wonder and Beauty of God’s Amazing Grace

Heavenly Father, I come before Your throne of grace through the precious Name of Jesus Christ, Your Son. I am overwhelmed with praise and gratitude that by Your amazing grace, You have given me a seat at Your table as a son or daughter. You have stripped off my dirty rags and replaced them with robes of color.

It is because of Your grace, meaning undeserved favor, that my salvation and development of righteous living is not performance based. Both are a gracious gift from You. You want me to have Your grace because You love me, not because of what I have done. 2 Timothy 1:9 “Who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began.“

I thank You for the old hymn Amazing Grace written by John Newton because it summarizes the wonder and beauty of Your grace.

Amazing Grace

“Amazing grace! How sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me! I once was lost, but now am found, was blind but now I see. ‘Twas grace that taught my heart to fear and grace my fears relieved; how precious did that grace appear the hour I first believed! Through many dangers, toils and snares, I have already come. ‘Tis grace hath brought me safe this far, and grace will lead me home.”

Being a benefactor of the greatest gift and sacrifice ever made, I humbly come before you and like Paul, thank you for what Jesus expressed to him in 2 Corinthians 12:9. “‘My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.’” Amen.
