God’s Discontentment With Pride

Just Heavenly Father, I come before You boldly, not out of my own strength, but rather through the perfection of Your Son and His gift of that perfection to me. It is clear in Your Word (the Bible) that You have a disdain for pride. You have mentioned it in approximately 46 verses in 17 books. Some of the verses are very direct. Proverbs 8:13The fear of the LORD is to hate evil; pride and arrogance and the evil way and the perverse mouth I hate.

Forgive me for the times when I see myself as self-sustaining and let pride creep in. I do not want to have happen to me what is expressed in Proverbs 16:18. “Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.” I ask You to open my eyes to my true vulnerabilities and frailties. Show me my weaknesses and knock down self-pride.

Direct me not to have a spirit of fear, but rather a spirit of unmatched strength and boldness found only in You. Hebrews 4:16Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

Remind me constantly to let my sense of self-reliance die, and instead lean on Your sufficiency. It is Your wisdom guiding my decisions. It is Your love that enables me to show compassion and care towards others. It is Your very air that I breathe. I am nothing without You. In 2 Corinthians 12:9 Jesus said, ‘”My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.“‘

In Jesus’ Name, thank you that if I allow You to fully control my life, pride will not be a part of it. Amen.

Sovereign Heavenly Father, I come before Your throne through the life, death, and resurrection of Your Son Jesus. Thank you for this privilege as Your child. Forgive me for the times when I have not practiced reverence for You the way I should. I ask You for insight and greater understanding of Your character, love, comfort, knowledge, mercy, grace, and power.

Infatuate my heart with Your splendor by removing all scales off of my eyes and directing me to more seriously do what is expressed in Hebrews 12:28. “Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us have grace, by which we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear.

I long to see You for who You truly are and for You to dispel any preconceived notions or ideas of Your character that are not true. Protect my heart from viewing You as anything less than great and deserving of my complete reverence. Give me a righteous fear (respect) of You and from that fear, let understanding and wisdom grow in me.

In Your Word in Proverbs 9:10, You say that “the fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.” Direct me to fully comprehend that reverence for You is the only proper posture I can take when I begin to know You for who you really are.

It is such a great blessing to read and meditate on the promise You have expressed in Psalm 128:1. “Blessed is every one who fears the LORD, who walks in His ways.” Constantly remind me to be open to Psalm 86:11. “Teach me Your way, O LORD; I will walk in Your truth; unite my heart to fear [reverence] Your name.

Prayer Lessons in Difficult Times (Based on Psalm 13)

All wise Heavenly Father, in Jesus’ Name, thank you for the prayer lessons I can learn from David in Psalm 13. In verse one, You show me that David was totally honest with You about how he felt. Verse 1: “How long, O LORD? Will You forget me forever? How long will You hide Your face from me?

Sometimes I think You are not going to be pleased if I tell You exactly how I feel. However, throughout the Bible You demonstrate that this isn’t true. You want me to have a close relationship with You, where everything is out in the open. You already know it all anyway.

Like David did, direct and encourage me to have faith and trust in You no matter how long I have to wait. Verse 3a: “Consider and hear me, O LORD my God; enlighten my eyes.” It is Your unfailing mercy that will bring me through to the other side of any crisis. Verse 5a: “But I have trusted in Your mercy.

When the pressure is on, encourage me to follow David’s example and not give in to a life of despair. It is a great blessing that as a child of Yours, I can be honest and share my most intimate feelings with You and trust in everything I know about You.

Like David, I can end up with praise and rejoicing in You. Verse 5b-6: “My heart shall rejoice in Your salvation. I will sing to the LORD, because He has dealt bountifully with me.

In Jesus’ Name, thank you for the many powerful lessons in Your Word, the Bible. Amen.
