Giving Heavenly Father, in Jesus’ Name, thank you for the truth in Psalm 100:3Know that the Lord, He is God; it is He who has made us, and not we ourselves; we are His people and the sheep of His pasture.” Because of who You are, I can respond to You with faith, reverence, and gratitude instead of fear and anxiety. Direct me to do Psalm 100:4-5. “Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, and into His courts with praise. Be thankful to Him, and bless His name. For the Lord is good; His mercy is everlasting, and His truth endures to all generations.

You have given me so much to be thankful for, even when my circumstances seem grim. Give me the eyes and desire to see You at work no matter what is going on in my life and the world. This Thanksgiving holiday, I am grateful to You for the following spiritual and physical things: ___________. James 1:17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.

Show me how to have giving thanks be an integral part of my relationship with You and my interactions with others. Ephesians 5:18b-20be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.” Direct me to carry this attitude beyond the holiday of Thanksgiving into my daily life.

In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Heavenly Father, I come to You in Jesus’ Name to thank You for how easily accessible You have made Yourself to me. Unlike the believers during and before the time Your Son lived on Earth, I have 24/7 access to You through the Holy Spirit dwelling within me. John 16:7b It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you.” Thank you for the way the Holy Spirit convicts, guides, and leads me. John 14:26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.”

It is a great blessing to know that whatever the Holy Spirit communicates to me comes straight from You. John 16:13 However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.” Encourage me not to take this precious gift for granted.

I also want to thank You for all of the physical blessings You have given me this year, like my health, safety, family, friends, and job. Thank you for giving doctors and scientists the wisdom to develop medicines to prevent and treat the symptoms of the worldwide pandemic. Direct me to listen to the Holy Spirit’s promptings about how to express gratitude to You and others. Motivate me to be grateful even for the difficult circumstances and people I experienced this year, because I know that You will ultimately work all things for my good. Romans 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.

Thank you for hearing and listening to my prayers. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Heavenly Father, I come in Jesus’ Name to pray about the theme of Thanksgiving. I thank You for all the normal blessings of food, loved ones, friends, health, etc. However, this Thanksgiving, I want to focus my praise and thanksgiving on items that only You have done and are doing. My ultimate praise and thanksgiving is for my salvation from death and the gift eternal life.

All the many wonderful blessings promised in Your Word (the Bible) are only available to me because of my response to John 5:24. Jesus said: “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgement, but has passed from death into life.

What a blessing it is to know that when I get up in the morning, You are waiting, willing and able to take me through every situation in my life. Lamentations 3:22-23Through the LORD’S mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.

Thank you that as I live this life with its disappointments and struggles, as a child of Yours, none of these things are a waste or a surprise to You. You are loving, sovereign, all powerful, everywhere present, and You have everything work together for my good. Romans 8:28And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.

Thank you that Your well never runs dry. 2 Corinthians 12:9My grace is sufficient for you.” Thank you for the blessing and peace of forgiveness of sin. 1 John 1:9If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” Since this is only a fraction of who You are and what You do, I ask You to direct me to practice more of Ephesians 5:20 in the coming year. “Giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.” Amen.

Heavenly Father, I come to You in Jesus’ Name this Thanksgiving to thank You for giving us Your Son and allowing Him to die on the cross for our sins. You resurrected Him from death and left Your Spirit with us until all You have planned for here on earth is done.

It is a blessing beyond description to be a child of Yours and have the Holy Spirit dwelling within me. If I allow it, You will direct all phases of my life. As I live in this chaotic world and deal with many personal problems, I thank You for the invitation expressed in Mathew 11:28-29. “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

Prayer Exercise of Gratitude for the Next Seven Days

Meditate and give thanks each day on the following topics:

Friday: Thank you for giving me salvation and a future home in Heaven. John 3:15 That whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.

Saturday: Thank you for the blessing of forgiveness. 1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Sunday: Thank you for caring for my physical body and emotional health. Philippians 4:19And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

Monday: Thank you for the wonder and beauty of Your creation. Psalm 19:1 The heavens declare the glory of God and the firmament shows His handiwork.

Wednesday: Thank you for the joy and love provided by my personal and church family. Hebrews 10:24 And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works.

Thursday: Thank you for the blessing, power, and promises of Your Word, all of which enriches my life. Psalm 119:105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

Friday: Remember all that God has brought to your mind to be thankful for. Psalm 92:1It is good to give thanks to the LORD, and to sing praises to Your name, O Most High.

Lord, in Jesus’ Name, guide me to be a thankful person every day as a lifestyle, not only on Thanksgiving Day. Amen.

I come to You today, Heavenly Father, in Jesus’ Name, to give You thanks for this coming national day of thanksgiving. Show me how to have this day be more than just a day of holiday cheer and festivities. Direct me to have this day serve as a reminder of Your faithfulness and just how much I should be thankful to You. Lamentations 3:22-23 “Through the LORD’S mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.”

No matter what place I find myself in today, encourage me to give thanks to You. 1 Thessalonians 5:18 “In everything, give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” This year, teach me to give thanks not only for the things You have given, but also for the things You have withheld. Blessings can come not only from abundance, but also from the lack of it. Your plan is always perfect even if I don’t think so sometimes. Jeremiah 29:11 “‘For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not harm you, plans to give you hope and a future'” (NIV).

Most of all, I want to thank You for the precious, amazing gift of salvation through the birth, death, and resurrection of Your Son. I can never thank You enough for the gift of life found in You through Jesus. I ask that You show me how to extend this season of thankfulness far beyond just the holiday, but into all of life, as is expressed in 1 Thessalonians 5:16-17 “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing.”

Thank You that I can bring these thoughts in Jesus’ Name, Amen.

A suggestion on how to use this prayer guide and fulfill the command in 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for that is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you:”

After each topic, pause for a short time to offer your own expressions of thanksgiving and praise to God. Meditate on a few of these every day between now and Thanksgiving.
